Commercial Experience Including Commercial Research

TECHNOLOGIES, SERVICES AND PRODUCTS DR. HERR DEVELOPED:

First embryo sexing in the world using PCR; First pre-implantation genetic test using PCR; Sex can be determined in less than 40 minutes from as few as one cell, even one sperm cell!An embryo biopsy method. Allows for the removal of a cell or two from a tiny pre-implantation embryo;
Embryo sexing kit and cow-side embryo sexing. Designed a "Swiss army lab" which could be unfolded in the field in 20 minutes;
Embryo cloning technique using embryo splitting;
I was technical supervisor for a large embryo transfer and semen center. During this time I developed technologies and directed improvements that drastically increased the success of cattle, sheep, deer and goat artificial reproduction. Also, I personally froze, sexed, cultured and cloned thousands of embryos.
Media for splitting, sexing, holding, freezing and culture of mammalian embryos; These solutions are currently the best selling in the world. I did the basic research, designed the solutions, the packaging, and developed the manufacturing.
Field embryo splitting system (Twinner System);
Invented the constant temperature packs for 17°C semen storage (patented), for fresh semen sales; this doubled the company’s summer revenues.
Freeze-able, single-tube diagnostic kits for embryo sex determination;
Contributed to the design of a capillary PCR thermocycler;
Improved micromanipulation techniques and equipment;
Improvements to the technique of Polymerase Chain Reaction;
Developed methods for switching on and off various enzymes used in conjunction with PCR;
Miscellaneous equipment for embryo transfer and artificial insemination.

ASSOCIATED COMMERCIAL ACTIVITIES:

Ran the Australian Research and Development / Biotech Firm: AB Technology

Ran the USA Research and Development / Biotech Firm: AB Tech USA

Development and conduct of regular training schools in embryo freezing, culture, splitting and sexing for embryo transfer practitioners; extensive international travel to train scientists from Britain, France, Germany, Japan, U.S.A., Canada, Mexico, Columbia, Israel, Australia and New Zealand;
Preparation of an internationally recognized 15 min. video for training in embryo splitting (in association with ANU video production unit);
Frequent lectures and demonstrations to producers and veterinarians, Australian and international, on the roles and practice of conventional and novel artificial breeding technologies;
Initiation of a company in the United States to market invented products and processes;
Established a manufacturing facility in Australia for production of equipment and media used in the artificial breeding industry; established culture media manufacturing facility in the U.S.A. including the design of a software program, The Perfect Solution, for complete control of the manufacturing procedure, instituted quality control, developed the world's first system for simultaneous point of delivery filtration and metered dispensing using peristalsis;
Developed products, established markets and advertising promotions, 5-year business plans and yearly budgets. One indication as to the success of these activities was an Austrade Award, "1991 Agricultural Marketing Award for Innovation", that was presented by the Minister for Primary Industries and Energy and the Minister for Industry, Technology and Commerce, this award being a direct result of these efforts;.
A member of the team of scientists who were the first in the world to apply PCR to the determination of the sex of an embryo. This was the first PCR based pre-implantation genetic test of any sort.
Helped initiate commercial research activities at Ethrog Biotechnology in Israel.
