SERVICE TO THE STUDENTS
 
Pre-Med/Pre-Dent Mock Interviews The students are interviewed by three faculty members and a medical student in the same manner as occurs during a U of Washington Medical School interview. We do this on a Saturday at the Gonzaga University Library, Spokane, Washington. 7 times
Pre-med/Pre-dent organization organizer I helped organize the Pre-med/Pre-dent Society. It is now a very active student organization, composed of students with the common goal of becoming workers in the area of human medicine. 7 years
Pre-med/Pre-dent faculty adviser Each student organization has a faculty adviser. I am the faculty adviser for this organization. 7 years
Student Advising Although all professors do this, I do a lot of student advising. Actually, I truly enjoy this activity and feel I make a difference 14 years
Created Pre-med Seminar This helps our students to learn to discuss and deal with ethical dilemmas like those posed at interviews. We cover Hippocratic Oath, Right to Die, Managed Health Care, Patients Bill of Rights, etc. 5 times
MCAT Study Course Help students prepare for the MCAT exam. This is the exam that students must do well on to get into a medical school. 3 times
Pre-Med/Pre-Dent Option I help to create the new option designed specifically for students wanting to go into the medical field. Courses are sequenced so student will have the best chance to do well on the MCAT. Completed

SERVICE TO THE DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGY
 
Cell Biology Curriculum Committee Developed the Cell Biology Course, Eastern Washington University now offers. Wrote the CPAC, which is the paperwork that.is reviewed university-wide and then possibly approved prior to course adoption. 1 time
Cell Biology Course Developed and teach the new cell biology course. Continues
Molecular Biology Curriculum Committee Presented the course concept and wrote the CPAC for the Molecular Biology Course. Unfortunately, I never got the opportunity to teach the course. Another professor wanted that responsibility. 1 time
Embryology Curriculum Committee Wrote the CPAC and presented the concept to the Department. 1 time
Embryology 477 Developed and currently teach the Embryology 477 course at Eastern Washington University. Continues
Animal Facility Committee This is the committee responsible for departmental use of animals in research. 5+ years
Scholarship Committee This committee was involved in reviewing candidates and making recommendations for scholarships to the department. 1 year
Introductory Biology Committee This group helps make curriculum and textbook decisions. 4 years
Computer Committee This group makes recommendations on departmental expenditures for computer and related purchases. 15 months
Assessment Committee I served on this committee last year. Its purpose is to provide tools for measuring the success of the department in educating students. Last year progress was made. 1 year
Premed Advisor I advise students interested in the human medicine fields. 7 year
Human Biology Option Adviser I advise students interested in the human medicine fields. This is currently our Departments largest option. 4 years
Genentics' Curriculum Committee Development of a new genetics course. 3 months
Space Committee Worked to maximize efficient use of building space. 1 year
Department Website Development Designed, created and trained personnel for the department's website. 2 years
Indirects Committee Funds small graduate student grants. Worked to remove cronyism. 1 year
 
SERVICE TO THE UNIVERSITY
 
Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee This is the University-wide committee that oversees the use of animals in experiments. This committee follows the guidelines of and answers to certain federal government agencies. 5+ years
Senate Alternate If the senator that represented the Department was unable to attend the meetings, I went. 2 years
Research and Scholarship Committee This is the group that made decisions pertaining to annual leave request from faculty. 2 year term
Honors Advisory Board This groups works with the Director of the Honors Program to make decisions about Eastern Washington University program. 2 year term
Legislative Committee This committee is involved in Eastern Washington University’s relationship with the Washington State government. 1 year
Instructional Designer Search Committee This committee is currently reviewing candidates for employment at Eastern Washington University for distance learning. 6 months
President’s Task Force for the Learning Environment This group is attempting to find ways to encourage stronger community feeling from the students about Eastern Washington University. 3 months
National Education Association Active member and supporter of the faculty’s union. 1 year
Graduate Committees Served on several committees outside the Department. 4 years
Cloning: How we got to Dolly. This was an essay I wrote for the Eastern Washington University’s alumni newsletter, "Perspective". Vol.8 No.3 Spring 1997

Scientific Olympiad I was the regional and statewide event supervisor and judge for the genetics portion of the exam, which is called "Designer Genes". This is a high school student science competition. Many times

SIRTI Activities Participated in monthly meetings of the "BioDevelopment and Business Forum of Spokane". 1.5 years
Cheney Middle School Volunteer I spent 3 days during the spring break teaching class after class about mammalian cloning. Spring Break ‘98
Sinauer Associates and W.H. Freeman and Company I was a participant in a focus group on general biology course development. On the same visit, I worked on decisions about a new edition of a major general biology text. This took place at North Hampton, Massachusetts. (and, no I don’t use their textbooks) September 7-11, ‘99
Scientific Olympaid I was this year's event supervisor and judge for the Bio-Process event for the region, state and the national Scientific Olympaid. February to May, 2000
Media Appearances. Appeared on television and radio to explain genetic concepts to the general public. May-June, 2000
